What is citric acid?
Citric acid is a natural acid found in many foods. Of course, the name comes from the same Latin root as the term citrus fruit. In 1784, chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele was the first person to isolate citric acid from lemon juice. Aside from occurring in lemons, this fruit acid is also present in a variety of other fruits, including apples and berries. Citric acid is used as both a flavour enhancer and a preservative. Another interesting fact is that citric acid is also created by metabolic processes in our bodies!
Today, citric acid isn’t usually extracted from lemons any longer because doing so is too laborious when large quantities are involved. Instead, a fermentation process is used. HEITMANN uses only renewable raw materials to produce its 100 per cent Pure Citric Acid.
Key advantages of citric acid
Citric acid is popular as a cleaning agent and limescale remover. Citric acid is very effective at removing limescale without producing an odour, so it has multiple uses in the kitchen and bathroom. It’s also fully biodegradable. If you want an eco-friendly way of removing limescale, citric acid is ideal. In addition, citric acid is suitable for use in food-contact areas because it’s non-toxic—an advantage that shouldn’t be underestimated, especially when descaling coffee machines or kettles. So, if you accidentally leave the descaling solution in the appliance and take a sip of it as a “lemon coffee,” it won’t be a medical disaster (although by no means a culinary highlight either).
What can citric acid be used for?
Applications of citric acid can be divided into the following categories:
- Descaling electrical appliances with citric acid
- Using citric acid to removing limescale from surfaces and fittings
- Using citric acid to clean and bring out shine
- Citric acid for cleaning burnt-on food from pots and pans
- Using citric acid as a fabric softener
HEITMANN pure Citric Acid can be used as a limescale remover and cleaning agent. It’s not suitable as food additive. Although it is pure citric acid, because it’s intended for sale as a cleaning agent, it’s not produced according to the guidelines that apply to food.
Descaling electrical appliances with citric acid
Citric acid can be used to remove limescale from many electrical appliances that are used with water. Examples include kettles, coffee makers of all kinds (e.g. traditional coffee makers, coffee machines, espresso machines, pod machines, and capsule machines), immersion heaters, and egg boilers as well as large appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.
Using citric acid to remove limescale from surfaces and fittings
Citric acid dissolves limescale rings and marks naturally and extremely effectively. This makes citric acid an excellent cleaning product for kitchens and bathrooms. Bathtubs, washbasins, shower trays, shower enclosures, and tiled backsplashes can be cleaned with the biodegradable acid, as can fittings and mixing nozzles.
Using citric acid to clean and bring out shine
Citric acid is ideal as a cleaning agent for surfaces made of stainless steel, plastic, ceramic, or chrome. In addition, citric acid removes streaks and deposits from teapots and coffee-pots, cups, toothbrush tumblers, and so on. Shiny deposits on the bottom of pots and pans are also easily removed with a little citric acid.
A dash of liquid citric acid added to normal cleaning water helps to dissolve limescale. And if you want to make your own all-purpose cleaner or dishwashing detergent, citric acid is the perfect base.
Citric acid for cleaning burnt-on food from pots and pans
With a little bit of citric acid, even cases that seem hopeless in the sink, such as stainless steel pots and pans with burn-on residues, need no longer be a source of dread. Simply bring a solution of water and biodegradable Pure Citric Acid to boil in the cookware and let it simmer for a few minutes. The built-up deposits can then be easily removed.
Using citric acid as a fabric softener
Pure Citric Acid can also serve as an eco-friendly alternative to fabric softener. Use liquid citric acid for this purpose, or dissolve the powder in water beforehand. Incidentally, other fabric softener alternatives include HEITMANN pure Soda and HEITMANN pure Active Soda.
Citric acid as a food additive
Citric acid is widely used in the food industry. HEITMANN pure Citric Acid is not suitable for use in food because, as a cleaning agent, it’s not produced in conditions that conform to food regulations. However, it is a food-safe cleaner and limescale remover, so it can be used with confidence for cleaning kitchens and kitchen appliances.
