Stay healthy through the flu season:

Effective protection against infections and colds

Every winter sees a new outbreak of flu. And alongside flu itself, other colds and viral infections also make our lives difficult. Fight back against the sniffles. We explain how good hygiene can help you reduce the risk of infection and stay healthy through the cold season.

    Cold germs love hands

Many doctor’s surgeries now display signs showing a crossed-out handshake to indicate that they don’t greet patients this way. And that’s justified, since germs spread particularly quickly from hand to hand. But this doesn’t just apply to doctor’s surgeries or even to shaking hands. Whether at school, in the office, in toilets, out shopping, or in public transport: we are constantly in contact with objects that many people touch. And this is how viruses pass quickly from one hand to the next, especially in flu and cold season. The first rule for avoiding infection is this: take care of your hands!

Wash and disinfect your hands properly

There are five steps to proper handwashing:

      1. Hold your hands under running water

      2. Rub your hands thoroughly with soap, not forgetting between your fingers and under your nails.

      3. Do this for 20 to 30 seconds

      4. Then rinse your hands under running water.

      5. Dry your hands well. Ideally, use a paper towel when you’re out and about.

Hand on your heart—how regularly do you lather your hands for 20 seconds in your daily routine? And who actually wants to check the clock each time? Yet this is the time needed to properly remove germs when washing our hands. Our timing tip: sing the words to “Happy Birthday” in your head twice. We recommend the same for children—but singing out loud and using their current favourite song! When you’re out and about, it’s best to use paper towels to dry your hands. At home, hand towels should be changed regularly.

Disinfect your hands in six steps

There’s even a European standard for hygienic hand disinfection: EN 1500. Follow the six steps based on this model to disinfect your hands reliably. All IMPRESAN products for hand disinfection are suitable for this purpose.

In total, hygienic hand disinfection takes 30 seconds. Each step should be performed for 5 seconds. Your hands must be kept moist with the hand disinfectant throughout the process. If necessary, add more disinfectant.

    Protect against infection with IMPRESAN

When used correctly and for the right length of time, IMPRESAN Hand Sanitiser Gels and IMPRESAN Hygiene Sprays eliminate 99.9 per cent of specific bacteria, fungi, and viruses. These include the following:

    • Type A (H1N1, H5N1) and type B flu viruses
    • enveloped coronaviruses (e.g. SARS)
    • RSV (respiratory syncytial virus)

This means that IMPRESAN products are effective against the most common causes of colds, such as coughs and sneezes, flu, and flu-like infections.

    Hygiene on the go

When you’re out and about, it’s often difficult to find somewhere to wash your hands. Hand sanitiser gels from HEITMANN are a great solution. The little bottles fit in any pocket, bag, or glove compartment, meaning you can be sure of clean and safe hand hygiene on the go—even without water. HEITMANN disinfectant products are also available in a handy travel size for use on surfaces like handles or toilet seats.

Other things to consider during the cold season

If you exercise in the outdoors, drink lots of water, and eat healthily, you’re strengthening your immune system. This means you’re less vulnerable to colds and viral infections.

How often do you touch your face or your mouth without thinking about it? If you pay attention, you’ll find it happens more frequently than you think. This allows germs to spread quickly from surfaces to our mouths, increasing the risk of infection. You can significantly reduce this risk by being more aware of your hands.

Got a cold despite everything? Then recover at home. This way, you’ll reduce the risk of infecting your friends and colleagues. By the way, the old rule “put your hand over your mouth!” achieves the exact opposite effect. Germs are easily passed on this way. The best thing to do is to cough or sneeze into a handkerchief or into your elbow. Also, don’t forget to keep your distance from other people and turn away.

Stay healthy through the flu season

The key thing to remember: clean hands help us to stay healthy! And to make doubly sure, use HEITMANN disinfectant products for the best protection in the cold season.
